Fred was a graduate of Freeport H.S. and the University of Maryland. He played Football, Baseball and Basketball at Freeport. He was one of the leading rushers in the AK Valley. He was AK Valley MVP and was selected to the all state team his senior year. Fred received a scholarship to the University of Maryland where during his freshman year he was teammates with former Har-Brack graduates, Dick and Ed Modzelewski who went on to play in the NFL. In 3 years as a starter Fred only missed one game. He averaged over 4yds per carry as a sophomore and 5 yds per carry as a junior and senior. He was named the outstanding back by the Terrapin club and his teammates and also received many honors from the ACC . In 1956, he helped lead Maryland to an undefeated season, an ACC championship, and a berth in the Orange Bowl losing to the eventual National Champions, Oklahoma Sooners. Former college Hall of Fame coach Jim Tatum said of Fred, ” He was one of the greatest players I ever coached, He was all heart”.
